Hanover (dpa) – The TUI travel group said on Monday it would offer package holidays to the Canary Islands to German tourists from early October, despite an official advisory from the German government against travel to Spain.

"We aim to provide the choice to the customer whether to embark on the trip, cancel it free of charge or change their booking," TUI spokesman Aage Duenhaupt told dpa on Monday.

"We are doing this because it is what the customers want," he said.

The Canary Islands, off the Moroccan coast, have long been a popular destination for Germans seeking midwinter sunshine.

But the official German advisory against travel to Spain has led TUI, the largest company in the sector, to drastically scale back flights to Spain and cancel all package deals.

The decision to reinstitute the popular package deals – which include accommodation and board – was taken with a view to the upcoming school holidays.

TUI said it saw no major risks in flying to the islands. "All the evaluations and numbers show that travellers on package holidays who stick to the rules are not in danger," Duenhaupt said.

And he noted that TUI travellers were insured, should testing for the novel coronavirus, quarantine or treatment be necessary.

The German authorities regularly updates its list of regions considered high-risk for the virus.

Travellers returning from these regions must undergo testing within 48 hours before or after entering Germany, and stay in quarantine until they receive the results.
