German media giant Axel Springer aims to hire several hundred more journalists in the coming years, a senior company official said in an interview.

Axel Springer owns brands such as the tabloid Bild, which has the highest circulation of any newspaper in Germany. Bild launched a television channel in August.

Axel Springer also operates the daily broadsheet Die Welt and has a majority stake in Business Insider. Newsletter businesses and classifieds portals are also part of the group.

Jan Bayer, the Axel Springer board member responsible for the News Media division, said in an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper that he expected the headcount of journalists to grow.

"Of the 16,000 employees at Axel Springer, 9,000 work in the media sector, of which 2,400 are journalists, and that is to become more than 3,000 within the next five years - a quarter more," he said.

Bayer said that number did not include the recent announcement that Axel Springer was purchasing US news website Politico and the remaining 50 per cent share of its current joint venture Politico Europe.

The venerable German publisher entered into a strategic partnership with the US financial investor Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) in 2019 and also delisted from the Frankfurt stock exchange in 2020, with the goal of quickly expanding its digital businesses.
